What’s the best smoke detector for your situation?
The best smoke detector isn’t necessarily the most expensive model or the one with the most features. The most important thing is to choose a reliable detector that’s suitable for the room where you plan to use it.
For a small apartment, a simple, standalone smoke detector may be sufficient. Do you have a multi-story home? In that case, it’s wise to look for a solution that alerts you throughout the entire house.
Your existing security system can also play a role. For example, do you already have an Ajax or Hikvision alarm system? If so, a compatible smoke detector can be a useful addition.
What should you look for when buying a smoke detector?
When you’re looking to buy a smoke detector, there are a few key features to consider.
Reliability and Certification
A good smoke detector must be able to detect smoke in a timely manner and sound a clear, audible alarm. Choose a smoke detector that complies with the European standard EN 14604. This standard sets requirements for, among other things, the operation and reliability of smoke detectors for residential use.
Ease of Use and Maintenance
A smoke detector should be easy to test and maintain. Therefore, look for an easily accessible test button, clear warning signals, and the specified service life.
Some detectors have a replaceable battery, while others have a built-in battery. Also check when the entire smoke detector needs to be replaced.
Suitability for Your Home or Business
Not every smoke alarm is suitable for every room. Think ahead about where you want to install the alarm, how many alarms you need, and whether you want to expand your existing systems.
Additional requirements may apply to commercial properties. For example, certain buildings require a professional fire alarm system. A standalone smoke detector may not always be sufficient in such cases.
How many smoke detectors do you need?
The number of smoke detectors you need depends on the layout and the number of floors in your home.
In the Netherlands, a smoke detector must be installed on every floor that has a living room, bedroom, or kitchen. Smoke detectors may also be required on floors with an enclosed escape route.
For example, do you have a home with a ground floor, first floor, and an attic with a bedroom? Then you’ll generally need at least three smoke detectors.
For added safety, you can also install detectors in bedrooms and other living areas. This way, you may be alerted even sooner if smoke develops.
Where should you install a smoke detector?
The placement of a smoke detector is just as important as choosing the right device.
Ideally, mount a smoke detector on the ceiling in the hallway or on the landing. Place it at least 50 centimeters from walls and corners, and not directly next to vents or heat sources.
In areas where a lot of steam or dust is generated, such as some kitchens and garages, a standard smoke detector may trigger false alarms. A heat detector can be a suitable alternative in certain situations, but it does not replace the required smoke detectors in other areas of the home.
Also, don’t forget to test your smoke detectors regularly and keep them clean according to the manual.
