Do you want to prevent a small leak from turning into major water damage? With Ajax WaterStop, you can shut off the water supply remotely and, when used with a water detector, even have it shut off automatically as soon as a leak is detected. This is useful in homes, vacation homes, offices, and commercial buildings where someone isn’t always present. The smart shut-off valve becomes part of your Ajax security system and is easy to control via the Ajax app. Ajax WaterStop is available in various connection sizes. Below, we explain how the system works, which model you need, and how to combine it with other Ajax components.
What is Ajax WaterStop?
Ajax WaterStop is a smart shut-off valve that is installed in the water line. The housing contains an electric actuator that can open and close the ball valve. The control unit communicates wirelessly with a compatible Ajax Hub.
Using the Ajax app, you can then check whether the valve is open or closed and control the water supply remotely. For example, if you’re on the go and receive a notification that there’s a water leak at home, you don’t have to rush home to manually turn off the main valve.
WaterStop is especially useful when combined with Ajax water detection. A water detector can detect a leak, after which the system can automatically take action.
Automatically shut off the water in case of a leak
Simply knowing that there’s a water leak is helpful, but the problem is only truly mitigated when the water supply is quickly shut off. That’s why you can set up an automation scenario within Ajax.
Suppose there’s a water detector next to the washing machine. The supply hose comes loose while you’re away from home. As soon as the detector senses water on the floor, it sends a notification to the Ajax system. With the right scenario set up, WaterStop is then instructed to shut off the water supply.

Which Ajax WaterStop do you need?
Ajax WaterStop is available with ½-inch, ¾-inch, and 1-inch connections. The models come in white and black.
The three sizes are:

Which model you need depends on the water line in which the WaterStop will be installed. A larger home does not automatically mean you need a larger WaterStop.
Check the size of the existing pipe and shut-off valve. Not sure? Have a plumber or installer verify this for you. Especially when installing in the main water line, it’s important that the connection fits correctly.
Do you need an Ajax Hub for WaterStop?
Yes, WaterStop is used as part of a compatible Ajax system. The Hub handles communication between the smart shut-off valve, detectors, and the Ajax app.
Do you already have Ajax security in your home? If so, check whether your control panel is compatible. If you don’t have a control panel yet, take a look at the various Ajax Hub control panels.
Are you starting from scratch with Ajax and want burglary detection in addition to water protection? Then it might be more convenient to start with one of the Ajax alarm system kits. From that foundation, you can expand the system later.
Controlling Ajax WaterStop via the app
WaterStop doesn’t just have to respond to a leak. Using the Ajax app, you can check the valve’s status and open or close the water valve yourself. This is especially handy for a vacation home, for example. Suppose you’ve been on the road for an hour and start to wonder if you turned off the water. With WaterStop, you can control this remotely without having to drive back.
You can also use automations. For example, you can set the water supply to shut off when the security system is armed or at another preset time.
Does Ajax WaterStop work without a power outlet?
Ajax WaterStop can run on batteries. This means there doesn’t necessarily need to be a power outlet right next to the water line. An external power source is also possible, in which case the batteries can continue to serve as a backup.
This provides more flexibility during installation. The exact installation options, of course, depend on the location of your water line and the available space around the shut-off valve.
For installation in the water line, we recommend consulting an installer or plumber if you’re unsure.
Where is the Ajax WaterStop particularly useful?
A smart water shut-off valve is useful anywhere a leak could cause significant damage or go undetected for an extended period. Consider, for example, a washing machine in the attic. If a leak occurs there, water can run down several floors before anyone notices.
An automatic water shut-off is also a good idea for a vacation home. The property may be unoccupied for days or weeks, meaning a leak could go undetected for a long time. The same applies to businesses. A leak that starts on Friday evening might not be discovered until Monday morning.
